City of St. Catharines moving forward with ways to accommodate vehicles, cyclists, and other means of getting around safely
The City of St. Catharines will keep looking at where to better accommodate vehicles, cyclists and other modes of transportation together.
Councillor Bruce Williamson says the Active Transportation Master plan, passed in principle this week, calls for changes in infrastructure to ensure greater safety.
He adds this could be difficult in certain areas. "It's already well developed, so that's one of the challenges, it's working around the infrastructure we've been dealt with. One of the main streets through the centre of the city is Geneva Street, and sections of it is one lane, so it's difficult to find space."
He adds they still have to deal with existing, aging infrastructure like sewers and roads.
He adds it'll benefit the environment, after taking many years and millions of dollars accomplish. "There's people out there that think it's the end of the car era, but we've got people investing in battery technology, and electric cars, and alternatives to the internal combustion engine. So, I don't see the car as something that's going to go away."
Council was told there aren't too many people using a bike in St. Catharines, around 1%.
Part of the plan involves having barriers between bike paths and roads.
