Niagara Region facing huge bill for replacement work
The Niagara Region is facing a monumental task as it spends millions of dollars to repair and replace aging infrastructure.
The Standard is reporting the region was looking at the $100-million bill for the Burgoyne Bridge replacement as the most expensive project in the Region's history, but the cost of that has been surpassed for a wastewater treatment plant in south Niagara Falls.
That will cost $399-million.
Regional councillors say spending this type of money, and deciding where it goes, is becoming more of an issue, as infrastructure such as roads, bridges and facilities near the end of their life cycle.
Municipal governments can only rely on property taxes, and can't run deficits, while federal and provincial governments have more resources.
