NRP say this was intended as a joke, woman remorseful and released without charge
Yet another online threat toward a school in Niagara that police say was intended as a joke, but gone wrong.
NRP were called to Brock University yesterday afternoon around 2.
They were contacted by Interpol in Washington, after that organization was called by social media app Snapchat, about a Thorold based user making a threat against the school.
Investigation led police to a Thorold home, where a 20-year old Brock student was arrested.
Police learned it was intended as a joke, and the woman was extremely remorseful and apologetic.
She was released without charge, but police will maintain contact with the school about her conduct.
It was less than 2 weeks ago that police arrested a teenager for making an online threat against a St. Catharines school, and again, that was intended as a joke, but gone wrong.
Things to Consider:
- Understand the Law: Threats, regardless of intent, can lead to criminal charges. A "joke" online can result in an arrest, court appearances, and a criminal record, which can impact future education and career opportunities.
- The Real-World Impact: Online threats disrupt schools, cause fear and anxiety, and drain community resources as law enforcement investigates every report thoroughly.
- Think Before You Post: Social media is not anonymous, and any statement that causes fear or alarm can have lasting consequences.
- Parental Guidance Is Key: Parents and guardians are encouraged to discuss responsible online behavior with their children, emphasizing the consequences of poor digital choices.
