E-Bikes Possible for Welland Trails

The city is looking at a pilot project to determine how they would fit

There's a chance you'll be able to ride an E-bike or E-scooter on trails and walkways in Welland.

The city is looking at a 2-year pilot, or test, to see how well an e-bike, in this case one with a motor, but also pedals, will fit.

Besides two abstentions, Councillor Leo Van Vliet was the only vote against.  "Even bicycles, they sneak up behind you, you don't know they're coming, they don't have a horn... some people are polite enough to yell at you to let you know you're in their way, but these e-bikes and e-scooters certainly travel a lot faster."

Councillor Sharmila Seteram suggested more public awareness of e-bike safety on trails.

Councillor David McLeod said it's important to accommodate all users, and spoke to traffic concerns.  "They go too fast, you don't hear them coming.... the same thing can be said about those using manual bikes and scooters.  It's a matter of the operator behaving in a proper way."

Chief Administrative Officer Rob Axiak admitted it could be difficult for police/by-law to enforce compliance.

Currently the law doesn't allow these bikes and scooters on trails.
