Council unanimously approved the mayor's motion, potentially leaving Niagara Health, and seeking provincial help
Fort Erie Mayor Wayne Redekop was applauded by his council colleagues and the public in council chambers over a motion to keep Douglas Memorial hospital open.
The lengthy motion calls for provincial help, and potentially use another health entity instead of Niagara Health.
Councillor Nick Dubanow was also applauded, when he spoke of appealing to the province. "I think we need to set out a business case, I think we need to say these are the needs of our community, this is what our community has to offer, and this is how we can do it. And if Niagara Health wants to go in a different direction, that's fine. I'm of the opinion we don't necessarily need them at this point."
He adds they have enough leadership at council, and people in Fort Erie, that can keep Douglas Memorial going.
Councillor George McDermott didn't hold back, saying Fort Erie is growing too much.
"Similar to Niagara Falls, we're all growing so quickly, and they're not accounting for any of that when they make these crazy assed decisions. To be honest with you, I just don't get it... they know what these problems are, they've known it for years."
The motion, unanimously passed, also gave a history of the hospital, and mentioned how the hours have been reduced to day only.
