It means a property tax increase of almost $14 a month, or a 5.5% increase in the budget approved in principle
If you live in Fort Erie, you'll be paying almost $14 more per month, this year in property taxes.
Town council just approved its 2024 budget in principle, adding that 5.5-percent increase applies to a median household.
It also says when the Niagara Region and board of education levies are included, the combined increase is 5.16%
The town adds residents will wonder "Why the increase?".... Mayor Wayne Redekop says Fort Erie is preparing for another year of growth, and the money is needed to maintain services and support the growth.
The town has set aside $27.6-million for 75 projects related to roads, bridges, wastewater and parks.
Some of that includes $4-million for the Gibson Centre and Vehicle Bay Expansion, and $3.5-million for the West Main Street storm sewer replacement.
Back in December, the town approved the water and wastewater budget, with an increase of 7.4-percent, or almost $10 a month.
Money will be spent in relation to strategic priorities set by town council, including access to primary and urgent health care, quality of life, also growth, prosperity and diversification, as well as the environment and housing.
