Group Hopes to Restore Welland Fire Station

They need votes to win national contest for $50,000

Your help is needed by a local group called Central Station Education Initiative, to win a contest to restore the Welland Central Fire Station.

David Thomson is with the Initiative, and tells us they are competing for $50,000, in a national contest called the Next Great Save, that restores heritage sites.

He adds they've already started work on the fire station.  "We have the original control panel... in which many, many years ago there used to be boxes on telephone poles, that they would pull, and that would alert the fire department."

He says the fire station has fire fighting equipment dating back to the 1920s that could be restored.

They are part of 12 finalists across Canada.

"We are the only one from Welland.  And basically what you do is we get people to vote, once a day, between April 18th and May 6th."

You can vote here, for the Next Great Save contest put on by the National Trust of Canada.
