New Transmission Line Planned for Niagara

Hydro One wants public input on the project, planned to run between Welland and Thorold, creating more capacity

A new hydro line will be built by Hydro One between Welland and Thorold.

Hydro One is having a public information day at the Royal Canadian Legion in Welland on November 19th, from 2 to 7pm.

The line will go between the Welland canal and Thorold Townline Road, alongside other assets, according to VP of Strategic Partnerships Sonny Karunakaran.  "One of the aspects of installing a new transmission line would be to try and keep it aligned with those routes.  Because you're trying to minimize the disturbance and overall impact in the region, and footprint, of what people are used to."

It'll add 400 megawatts of capacity to the power grid, employing about 100 people by the time it's ready in 2029.

He adds it's too early to estimate the cost.  "This is what we call a network asset, and accordingly would be part of the rate pool in Ontario.  All rate payers in Ontario would be contributing to the development and construction costs."
