Funding is to help tear down old, vacant buildings, rebuild for expansion
A unanimous vote at St. Catharines city council to provide $32,500 for the Niagara Artist Centre on St. Paul Street.
The plan includes tearing down vacant, unused properties around the centre, and creating facilities, offices and storage places for artists and entrepreneurs to thrive.
NAC consultant Rebecca Cann says it'll be for everyone. "If you're into wood working, and have never done it before, we'll have classes... we'll have opportunities for you to learn and grow your skills. If you want to do text tile art, or jewelry making, or ceramics, that serves children, youth, families."
She adds they are applying for grants from all three levels of government, as well as fundraising and donations.
The BIA's Executive Director Rachel Braithwaite says this will help neighbouring businesses.
"It will also provide a boost in tourism. The cultural richness fostered by the hub is a magnet for tourism. We have seen cities across the globe that a thriving art scene attracts visitors seeking unique and enriching experiences."
The group is looking at a 5-6 year time line, costing $10 to 12-million.
