OPP Reports Over 4,200 Collisions Involving Transport Trucks This Year

OPP says careless and aggressive driving factor into most crashes involving large commercial vehicles.

The OPP is reporting a large uptick in the number of collisions involving large commercial vehicles this year.

Ahead of its "Operation Safe Driver" campaign, the OPP says there have been 4,274 crashes involving transport trucks so far this year, which is 40 percent higher than this time last year.

29 of the crashes were fatal, resulting in the deaths of 40 people.

Those at-fault include drivers of both passenger vehicles and transport trucks.

Injuries were sustained in 503 of the incidents, and 3,311 of the crashes involved multiple vehicles.

The OPP says it will team up with the Ministry of Transportation for the campaign, to ramp up enforcement and education around risky driving in and near large commercial vehicles.

Behaviors they will target include speeding, improper lane changes and following too closely - the top three causes or contributing factors in transport truck crashes this year.
