Port Colborne Delegating By-Law Approvals

It has to do with who approves noise permits for bars hiring bands, whether it's council or city staff

Port Colborne is taking a look at how it handles noise by-laws for bars hiring bands on Friday nights through the summer.

Council will ask city staff to approve all noise exemptions for bars with few complaints, as a way to speed up applications, or to spread the work around.

Mayor Bill Steele brought this up while discussing renewal for the Belmont Hotel.  "But if it's a first issue of this, then, yes, it should come before council.  But when it's up for renewal, or when they apply that it goes out for comment, as we did with the Belmont, and nothing [complaints] came back, then staff has the delegate authority."

He adds they've done this for the last few years, with few complaints.

Councillor Ron Bodner made reference to a situation on how this would work.

"We have a problem going on in Ward 4, that by-law is dealing with.  But, I can tell you that the public that lives around this particular area, want to have their say here at council."
