Robbery Charge After Incident at St. Catharines Police Station

77 year old woman refused to give up her purse

A St. Catharines man has been charged with robbery after an incident at the police station located on Welland Avenue. 

NRP say a male suspect was acting erratically when he approached a 77 year old woman who was seated on a bench in the front lobby. 

The victim did not engage with the suspect as he paced throughout the front lobby. 

When the victim attempted to retrieve her purse from a bench, the suspect violently grabbed the purse from the victim as she struggled to hold on.

The suspect proceeded to flee towards the main entry door of the front lobby with the purse, while the victim who refused to let go fell to the floor.

She was then dragged throughout the lobby to the concrete steps in front of the police station.

Officers were eventually able to intervene and placed the male under arrest. 

The purse and its contents, were recovered however the woman suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries and was taken to hospital. 

39 year old Ajitsingh Chandel is facing a charge of robbery.
