Welland Canal workers could go on strike, starting tomorrow at midnight
Welland Canal workers could be going on strike this weekend.
The St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation says on Wednesday, it received a 72 hour strike notice from Unifor, the union representing the workers.
This means workers at seven locals in Ontario and Quebec could walk off the job tomorrow at midnight.
In a release, the corporation says the Seaway will be closed to all traffic in the event of a strike.
Unifor says a strike would effectively shut down transit through the Seaway, as shippers try to get cargo through before it closes for the winter.
"Employers have seen that workers will absolutely use their right to strike when they feel it’s necessary, and our members in all units at the Seaway have had enough," says Lana Payne, Unifor’s national president.
"It’s time to come to the table with a serious wage offer or the employer can watch what happens when workers stand together and demand their fair share."
