This is in Welland, where city council heard there are too many complaints of speeding
If you choose to speed in school zones in Welland, the city is looking at coming after you.
Councillor Sharmila Setaram's idea was passed recently, to look at speed cameras near every school, taking pictures from 7am to 6pm, Monday to Friday.
She says the city hears of too many complaints of speeding. "In Niagara region the implementation of automated speed enforcement has led to a 67% reduction in speeding violations per hour. Data from Niagara region shows the average driving speeds dropped by 13%."
Councillor Graham Speck voted against saying this is a regional issue, not city.
Councillor Leo Van Vliet was also against the motion. "If you're going to put a camera out there, it should be enforced 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, it shouldn't change. Speeding is speeding. To say that you can speed before 7 in the morning, or after 6 at night, that's just wrong."
Councillor Seteram pointed out regional cameras are working, city staff add that program will be expanding further.
