Splash Pad to be Built at Secord Woods Park

The vote at St. Catharines city council was unanimous

Kids in Niagara will soon have another splash pad for those hot summer days.

St. Catharines city council voted unanimously Monday night to build one at Secord Woods park in Merritton, for the summer of 2024.

It'll cost $1.5-million.

Councillor Harris was also focusing on winter months.  "Would it be possible to perhaps have engineering look into maybe the opportunity to incorporate some sort of refrigeration into before we do that so we could have an outdoor rink?"

City staff will report back to council on the cost of refrigeration.

Councillor Lindal suggested adding 10 more parking spots at the park, costing $100,000, since the parking lot at the nearby school fills quickly.

"After talking to many people in the neighbourhood, in and around St. Christopher's school, and on the other side of Carriage Road, they are planning on using the splash pad, especially, as the report indicates, the summers are getting hotter," she says.

Council voted that idea down, with Councillor Miller pointing out the public reacts negatively whenever green areas could be paved over.

The city plans to build one more splash pad, in Port Dalhousie.
