St. Catharines Busy with Potholes

City official says they can fill about 300 a day

It's that time of the year again when drivers do their best to navigate around potholes on city streets, something every municipality deals with.

Chris Anders is with the City of St. Catharines, and says they have city crews out every day, noting rougher roads like Facer Street and Jacobson.  "The roads are ranked from #1 to #6, with #1 being the highest priority.  So, they tell us what pothole has to be addressed, and how deep it can be, and how many days we have to respond."

He says since mid February they've received about 67 phone calls about problem spots, and 148 emails.

They can fill about 300 potholes a day, and the extra snow this year hasn't helped.

"Many of the roads that are older, have more cracking in the asphalt, or see heavy truck traffic, we see more potholes in those areas because the water is able to work its way into the cracks, and when it freezes, it pops the asphalt loose."

Sometimes they use cold patch, he describes as similar to a melted rice krispie square.
