Start of Battery Plant Construction Marked

Federal, provincial and local governments in Port Colborne today, as EV battery separator plant takes shape

Federal, provincial, and local government officials were in Port Colborne this morning, marking the start of construction of the $1.7-billion EV battery separator plant.

Federal Minister of Innovation Francois-Philippe Champagne was joined by provincial counterpart Vic Fedeli and others.

Fedeli says this is a milestone for Port Colborne, adding it didn't happen overnight.  "These investments are the culmination of years of relationship building, and that's what Francois was talking about, it's these ties that bind us, that we've built by traveling back and forth to Japan, over and over and over."

The partnership between Asahi Kasei and Honda Canada establishes Canada's first EV supply chain, with four new plants.

Champagne handed out more credit.  "I mean, this region is never going to look the same, chair, and mayor, and I want to congratulate you, as you've been with us every step of the way.  And, to my colleague Vance Badawey, to Minister Filomena Tassi, to Chris Bittle, thank you for your tireless support."

He also acknowledged all the workers that'll make the plant work.

The Prime Minister, Premier and others were in Port Colborne not long ago first announcing the plant.
