Wanted in Lincoln: Family Doctor

Town council unanimously passed a motion to spend $25,000 to recruit one for next year, possibly asking private sector for help

Town of Lincoln is spending $25,000 to recruit another family doctor next year.

Council unanimously passed an incentive program to do so.

Director of Economic Development Paul Di Ianni added they'd love to get it to $50,000 or $75,000.  "We're going to look at opportunities to maybe ask the private sector to help bolster our $25,000 to make it incentives a little bit larger.   See if there's any philanthropic businesses in our community that might want to."

Regional recruitment director Jill Croteau said bringing a doctor from the UK can take up to 18 months.

Many other cities are doing similar programs, such as Welland, which is offering $100,000.

Regional recruitment director Jill Croteau added for some doctors it's not about the money.  "It really does boil down to community, whether or not they're looking for a more urban centre, a rural centre, whether or not they have friends and family in a certain area.  A lot of the international physicians I'm working with, it does become important, because they are moving their family across the world."

She says she's been to Ireland to talk to Canadians who want to work there, so she works to bring them back, and not so much foreign doctors.
