Welland to Build Emergency Homeless Shelter

The NIagara Region expected to cover the cost of the 50-room facility on city owned land on Ontario Road

A 50-room temporary emergency shelter will be built in Welland.

City council recently approved a lease agreement with the Niagara region on city owned land at 851 Ontario Road.

It'll be run by professional staff and monitored around the clock, ensuring a safe and supportive environment for those in need.

The city says the site was chosen after a thorough review of potential sites, and will be close to essential amenities and municipal services.

It's in response to the growing need for emergency shelters.

The Niagara Region is anticipated to cover all cost, and will be built using modular units similar to a shelter in St. Catharines.

The city also says Welland council had two public meetings on this, and a third is not needed for approval, in fact, having another meeting is against the law to prevent discrimination of where someone can live.
