She's being honoured for going above and beyond the call of duty for Niagara EMS.

Operations Superintendent Carolyn Chandler-Hill was alone in a response vehicle, when she was called out to help someone who was thinking about committing suicide.

"I could hear it over the radio happening I recognized that she needed help and that's our job, to be there people need help. I just did what I needed to do at the time."

She arrived on scene before the ambulance and was able to diffuse the situation.

Chandler-Hill was presented with the Regional Chair's Award of Valour at last night, and received a standing ovation from Regional Council.

She has been a paramedic for almost 15 years now.

"My father was a paramedic, my brother's a paramedic and my mother was a nurse so it was sort of a natural progression. When I first started I wasn't sure that this is what I wanted to do but it has been a super rewarding experience throughout my career. I absolutely love it and I wouldn't do anything different now."

Chandler was an Advanced Care Paramedic, before she was promoted to Operations Superintendent on Monday. She will be providing support and guidance for front line paramedics.
